Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 15

No luck with getting out with my KX3 kit this week. As I’m sure most hams are well aware, this week brought us a nice coronal mass ejection from our friend, Sol. Band conditions were certainly affected by that for a while this week. The solar weather cleared up just in time for our local…

Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 14

So, fun fact. I got my new-to-me Elecraft KX3 at a huge steal, it turns out. Just out of curiosity, I pieced together all of what I purchased and added it to my cart on the Elecraft site and realized I saved about 51% off retail.

Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 12

I bought the rigid loop for the Chameleon F-Loop 3.0 magnetic loop antenna and it arrived this week. It was super simple to install and afterward, I was hoping to be able to easily tune 40 meters. However, I found it to be just as difficult to tune 40 meters as with the LMR400 cable…

Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 11

I didn’t get on the air much at all this week. I tried to tune the Chameleon F-Loop 3.0 magnetic loop antenna for 40 meters earlier this week and got so fed up with its inability to land on a usable SWR that I gave up and packed it all back into its carrying bag.

I activated my second Parks On The Air park early this week. I managed to work from US-0712 Manassas Battlefield Park for about an hour and a half before other visitors began to arrive and encroach upon my antenna deployment.

CWMorse Pocket Paddle Review

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll surely know that I am a fledgling CW student. I purchased, as my first-ever Morse paddle, a Vibroplex Iambic Standard paddle and quickly found that it would be much too heavy to carry around while operating portable. It sure is a great desk paddle, though! However,…

Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 6

Earlier this week, I posted about creating a home-brewed antenna guy ring out of a disc of acrylic. It’s not the best solution, I’ll admit, but it should work fine. I missed a chance to test it out over this weekend due to the weather, but I’m planning for an upcoming deployment and maybe I’ll…

Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 5

Well, this week was a bit of a bust. Some of the first days of Spring and really nice outside temperatures around 80º and yet I didn’t get to operate outdoors at all. I did however, find a new local park that offers kayak rentals, so there’s that.
