Review
I picked up this ZN-9ZX key from the 2026 Vienna Wireless Society WINTERFEST hamfest for a reasonable price that could not be passed up. This key has serial number 864 stamped into the bottom of the base along with the model number, but no other information was provided from the seller concerning when the key was purchased, number of previous owners, etc. The key was in excellent shape, almost “like new” in fact. I sent a request for manufacturing information to Tony, N3ZN, and he replied with the answer I was seeking. This key, with serial 864, was built on March 5, 2020.
It was clear, after using the paddles for a while, why these keys are so highly regarded by CW operators. The build quality for the ZN-9ZX is phenomenal. All the premium features one would expect from a top-rung key can be found here, from the micro threaded contact adjustment screws to the magnetic action of the paddles to the fit and finish of the components. The key is flawless and is a pure joy to use.
The ZN-9ZX paddles sit upon a heavy, powder-coated, steel base which is 3″ x 3.25″ x 1″ (L x W x H). With the paddle assembly mounted on top, four rubber feet attached to the bottom of the base, and the supplied TRS cable attached, the entire key weighs in at a hefty 3 lbs. The paddle arms utilize press-fit pivot pins which are set in sealed ball bearings top and bottom which ensures very smooth movement when in use. My key is the 5/8″ OTO configuration.
At first glance, one might mistake the ZN-9ZX as a ZN-9+, as both are very similar in physical appearance. However, the ZN-9+ is slightly larger in physical dimensions and a bit heavier in weight. The biggest different visually is the geometry of the top plate, and of course the model number plate thereon. The ZN-9+ also offers different OTO measurements than the ZN-9ZX.
