2025 Zombie Shuffle

If you haven’t heard of the Zombie Shuffle QRP CW event, then let me have the honor of introducing you. I’m making plans to participate, so should you!

The Zombie Shuffle came about in 1998 from a ham club in California. Rumor has it that someone in the club built a QRP transceiver for which some others felt unhappy and called QRP enthusiasts “zombies”. The insult-turned-compliment stuck and so the Zombie Shuffle (because zombies don’t sprint!) began.

Held annually in October, the Zombie Shuffle is a QRP CW only event. Participants are encouraged to test their skills by operating with 5 Watts or less and via CW mode only from 3:00 PM to midnight, local time for the operator. The Zombie Shuffle for 2025 will take place Friday, October 24 on 80 meters through 10 meters (non-WARC only).

Participants send the following message exchange. RST, State/Province/Country, Zombie number, and Zombie name. Here’s an example.

5NN VA 2111 Dogmeat

If you’re running, you’ll be calling “CQ BOO”.

Bonus stations will give 3333 as their Zombie number.

Point totals are tallied automatically when participants complete the summary sheet (provided on the event website for download) and then the summary sheet is submitted to the event hosts. No log submissions are necessary.

If you want to participate, check out the Zombie Shuffle website and if you want to reserve your very own Zombie number, email the “Grand Inquisitor” at owner@lazure.net and provide your name and callsign and state your intent to operate the event.

I hope to get you in my log during this event. The more participants, the better. Good luck!
