Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 17

Expired Ham

Another week of amateur radio has expired. Expired Ham, get it? 🙂

Welcome to another issue of Expired Ham, a weekly newsletter where I discuss the ways I participated in the amateur radio hobby this week.

Lake Anna State Park now has K2MAS in the park activators list. However, once again, I only got my activation on FT8. This time it was not due to a lack of attempt. It was due to the scorching heat of our hottest weekend of the year so far. We had temperatures hovering in the upper 90s all weekend with very little air movement which made it very tiresome to be doing anything outdoors. I managed to work my FT8 activation in early Saturday morning before the sun crept into our campsite and made it too hot to stay out of the shade. I’ll have a post early this week talking a bit more about the activation. I met another ham while we were there. Jeffrey, K9VEG, and his wife were out walking their dogs around the campground and he spotted my Wolf River Coils antenna and came over to meet us. They are from just down the road a ways from here, so that’s pretty neat. He was there camping and had activated the park via CW the day before.

I’m not going to chat too much this week. Not a lot of radio things going on to speak of really. I got my hands on the POTA Explorer 20 and POTA Explorer 33 carbon fiber masts, though. I’m waiting on the ground stakes for them to arrive before I can use them for deploying these EFHW antennas more readily. More on that once I’ve had a chance to play with them a bit.

Alright, well, have a great week everyone. Be on the lookout for the POTA write-up coming in the next couple of days.

73,
Matthew, K2MAS
