My first in-person activity as a new member of the Vienna Wireless Society took place on April 26th at Roundtree Park in Falls Church, Virginia at the club’s annual Spring picnic. This year, there was a fox hunt event organized by club member Cliff Mauck, KE4PDS. Cliff assembled and hid two radio transmitters inside the park and then at the beginning of the event, provided the two frequencies on which they were transmitting. Luckily, I had brought along my FT-70D and was able to participate. I will need to build a directional antenna for next time, though. Even without the proper antenna for radio direction finding activities, I managed to locate one of the two hidden foxes. To be completely honest, this was mostly due to the fact that I was the only participant searching for the one I found.

The picnic was a lot of fun. It was nice to finally meet some of the club members in person and discuss some of our shared interests in amateur radio. I’m looking forward to getting more involved in club activities.
