Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 6

Expired Ham

Another week of amateur radio has expired. Expired Ham, get it? 🙂

Welcome to another issue of Expired Ham, a weekly newsletter where I discuss the ways I participated in the amateur radio hobby this week.

Earlier this week, I posted about creating a home-brewed antenna guy ring out of a disc of acrylic. It’s not the best solution, I’ll admit, but it should work fine. I missed a chance to test it out over this weekend due to the weather, but I’m planning for an upcoming deployment and maybe I’ll post a follow-up on how well it performs (or fails).

I ordered a new Morse paddle from CWMORSE.US and expect it to arrive next week. I’m thinking of maybe posting a review of it soon and perhaps even a comparison between it and the Vibroplex Iambic Standard that I have been using to learn Morse code. I bought the smaller, more portable paddle after realizing how heavy and cumbersome packing the Vibroplex would be for portable operations. Also, I see the CWMORSE.US paddles quite a bit in Youtube videos.

Speaking of CW, I had a brief chat with Robert, K5KEH, on VBand this week. Seemed like a nice fellow. As it turned out, he used to live in the Washington DC area in his younger days while his father was stationed in the area. Give him call if you hear him on the air.

As mentioned, my hopes of operating this weekend were squelched due to some unfavorable weather. I think I’m just going to have to schedule some paid time off during the work week and play radio all day or at least until my LiFePo4 battery dies.

Until next week, happy DX everyone.
