Expired Ham – Vol. 1 Iss. 5

Expired Ham

Another week of amateur radio has expired. Expired Ham, get it? 🙂

Welcome to another issue of Expired Ham, a weekly newsletter where I discuss the ways I participated in the amateur radio hobby this week.

Well, this week was a bit of a bust. Some of the first days of Spring and really nice outside temperatures around 80º and yet I didn’t get to operate outdoors at all. I did however, find a new local park that offers kayak rentals, so there’s that.

Me and the XYL went out over the weekend twice, to local parks with the hopes of them being suitable for deploying an antenna or two and not being in anyone’s way. The first park just didn’t have the room for radio operating and the second was busy, most likely because of the nice weather. I am planning on taking some mid-week PTO soon to try and work that second park. Maybe it’ll be more deserted during a workday. I desperately need to find somewhere to deploy my new antennas since I’m unable to do so here at the house. My EFHW needs to be sent up a tree and tuned. My new Wolf River Coils antenna kit needs tested out. Being a ham in the city is maddening sometimes.

My preparation for an upcoming CWOps class continues. I’m doing pretty well at copying individual characters at 25 wpm and 8 wpm Farnsworth. On that note, I’m going to cut this post short and get back to my CW practice.
